Optical networking is the current content of this theme.

The objective is to achieve an understanding of both the possibilities and limitations of optical networking.

The following topics are covered in this theme:

• Introduction / motivation

• Optical components / transmission / limitations

• Optical Core networks and Optical circuit switching (OCS)

• Control and Traffic management

• Protection switching and survivability

• Optical Transport Network (OTN)

• Optical Access networks

• Optical Burst/packet switching (OBS/OPS)

Some students will present articles in addition to the lectures held by the tutor

Total mark is given by oral exam
