MSc in Telematics – Communication Networks and Networked Services
- Specialization in Information Security
This field of specialization has a focus on securing networks and data stored, processed and transported in a networked environment. New paradigms of ubiquitous integrated computing and communication services have great potential for improving the QoS of existing and new network-based user services, in particular with respect to the security attributes confidentiality, integrity and availability but it also opens up new threat scenarios. Larger portions of processed data will be considered sensitive, the number of security relevant incidents is steadily on the increase, and the number of possible perpetrators inevitably increases as well. Threats may be active and passive, and unwanted incidents include abuse, eavesdropping and sabotage. Traditionally, security attributes have only been expressed in qualitative terms – contemporary research is laying the foundation for quantitative characterization of security that will make it easier to give precise answers to questions like: How can you be sure that you can securely do business on the Internet, or that nobody is able to empty your bank account? How does one perform encryption? Can we protect ourselves against spam and viruses? Can I send an e-mail to my doctor without having to worry about others possibly reading the content? Information security is one of the main areas within ICT research at NTNU, Department of Telematics.
