Trip to Kristiansund

The purpose of the trip is to bring PhDs, PostDocs, faculty, admin staff at ITEM together to get to know each other better. A boat trip to Kristiansund by Hurtigruta in May should be a pleasant experience and we hope for nice weather and smooth water.

On the way to Kristiansund we will have strategy seminar, discussions of workplace environment, and a PhD workshop. In Kristiansund we'll meet at Smia for an excellent dinner (Bacalao is strongly recommended). The following day we'll take the Kystekspressen back to Trondheim, no organized program on board that day.

Program

There will be no organized departure from Gløshaugen. Everybody meet onboard the ship, either for breakfast at 09:00 or in the reception at 09:45 (at latest), see program below.

Hurtigruta departs from Pier 1, nr 7. NOTE: there are two boats there, one northbound and one southbound. We'll take the southbound boat named “MS Midnatsol” Due to construction works, you should be there in due time to find your way to the boat. The boat departs at 10:00 and will not wait for you.

PhD workshop

Purpose: To present ongoing research samples @ ITEM by three invited PhD candidates. They are from different research areas and will mainly talk about their own research. However, they are invited to discuss their research in a broader “telematics” scope. Maybe the other PhD students get new ideas to their research and ideas for collaborations?

Session chair and moderator: Lawrie Brown

Máté Csorba (Networks) "Ant System for Service Deployment in Private and Public Clouds"

Abstract: “I will look into some current and hopefully interesting facts and trends in cloud computing, motivating our work. Thereafter I will define my research problem, efficient deployment of services, and I will continue with presenting the solution we have been working on. I include a short introduction to my algorithm and to the construction of key cost functions. Finally, I conclude with examples and corresponding results and some related problems not addressed by my work.”

Martin Eian (Information Security) "Robustness in Radio Access Network Protocols".

Abtract: Work on formal methods for analysis of the security of cryptographic protocols has progressed at a steady pace during the last few decades, but this work has mainly focused on the integrity, confidentiality and authenticity security properties. The development of formal methods for the analysis of _availability_ in a security context is still in its infancy. The development of such methods and models is one of the goals of my research project. The talk will cover: Denial-of-service vulnerabilities in current radio access network protocols, using IEEE 802.11 as an example, Detection and prevention of denial-of-service, Formal methods and models for the analysis of availability in a security context, Future work. Suggested topics for discussion during/after the talk: a) The underlying assumptions of dependability and security models, b) The similarities and differences between formal methods and models in dependability and security (availability), c) The applicability of dependability models to the security domain

Linda Ariani Gunawan (Networked services) "Model-Driven Secure System Development"

Recent trend in mobile devices gives rise to the increasing usage of distributed applications. Despite the fact that security threat is also rising, in practice many developers pay little attention to security aspect during the development process. Developing secure systems is a complex and error-prone task. My research project objective is to develop methods and tool-support to “easily” integrate security in system development. This talk will describe the overall ideas to achieve the goal, some challenges we face and the results so far.
