Network Laboratory (NetLab) in Context

The Network Laboratory (NetLab) was established with an objective on R&D (including Intelligent Transport Systems), based on wireless access and network technology. NetLab is part of the organization Wireless Trondheim Living Lab. The organization also includes the Information Services project at NTNU and Wireless Trondheim Ltd..

The planned NetLab Phase 1 (Spring 2009) consists of 14 street lab stations and 4 rooftop lab stations. The street labs are located from mid-town Trondheim to the intersection with the E6 tangent as shown in the map on the right. The square markers show rooftop lab stations and the circle markers show the street labs. Green color indicate that the lab is operational and yellow color means that the lab is under planning.

The NetLab Phase 2 is planned in the summer/fall of 2009 and consists of 5 and 6 new stations.
Each street lab station features the following capabilities:

  • Cabinet/shelter
    • Ethernet LAN switches with PoE ports
    • 2 industrial PCs (CVIS version, compromises host machines and router capability)
    • 8 sockets Power Outlet (230V)
    • Fibre termination (typically 4 fibres "in", 4 fibres "out")
  • Masts - external mounting points
    • One 4 m high mast adjacent to the cabinet, cabling (cat6) and mounting facilities also on selected traffic signal poles and street lamp masts
  • GPS receiver
The test field is a collaboration between NetLab and a number of significant player. These include: Norwegian Road Authority (The Directorate Technology Section), NTNU Dept. of Civil Engineering and Transport, SINTEF Technology and Society (Transport Safety and Informatics), SINTEF ICT Communication Systems, NTNU Dept. of Electronics and Telecom and Lab for behavior analysis at NTNU/SINTEF. The instrumentation is developed in the CVIS (Cooperative Vehicle Infrastructure Systems) project, which is supported by the European Commission – DG Information Society and Media.
