Ph.D. research topic:
Towards delay-sensitive tele-immersive distributed collaborations: modeling, simulation, synthesis, and compression

Abstract:
Artistic elements in tele-immersive collaborations, such as collaborative percussions and dancing, depend on visual cues and thus require a same low delay for both audio and video data to ensure harmonious synchronization. We envision the compression-by-network approach where network nodes can reduce video data intelligently due to changing traffic conditions to guarantee maximum constant delay for video data with graceful quality degradation. This PhD study attempts to provide comprehensive investigations on novel techniques that are promising and suitable for that approach. Moreover transient video scenes will be studied, modeled and implemented as novel traffic generators in simulation.

Research interests:

  • Processing, compression and transmission of color images and videos
  • Computer vision and pattern recognition
  • Discrete event simulation
  • Data compression
  • Hardware design and implementation of digital imaging systems
  • Subjective and objective quality assessment of imaging systems
